Founded over a century ago as Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (the three Ms in 3M), 3M began as a mining venture but the five founders quickly shifted their focus to sandpaper products.

Our favorite 3M milestone date is February 8, 1965. On this date, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing scientists David Antonson and Gerald Berger filed a patent application for something called “Transparent and Reflecting Articles.”
You guessed it: Antonson and Berger invented the world’s first solar control window film. The invention was granted Canadian Patent No. CA 724101 on December 21, 1965 and U.S. Patent No. 3,290,203 on December 6, 1966.

We install residential window film throughout Central Florida and Southwest Florida, and serve commercial, institutional and government customers throughout North America. Our company name literally means “applying technology to control the sun.” Today’s advanced window films do so much more than simply “control the sun,” but our original focus on understanding and applying technology continues to deliver maximum value and peace of mind for our customers.

Engineered Sun is owned by Mark Ecker and Mike DeForest. Before starting Engineered Sun, the two worked for several years as sales representatives for the world’s largest solar pool heating systems contractor, selling FAFCO® solar pool heating systems. Ecker and Deforest each consistently ranked among the nation’s top FAFCO® salespeople, and each held the number one ranking in the nation on more than one occasion.
After deciding to strike out on their own in 2002, Mark and Mike launched Engineered Sun as a solar heating systems contracting company. Engineered Sun quickly became one of the nation’s most successful master dealers for Aquatherm Industries solar pool heating systems. Interested in diversifying into other energy-saving products, the company added energy-saving window films to its product offerings.
Naturally, Engineered Sun wanted to work with the window film industry’s leading manufacturer. It didn’t take long to identify 3M™ as the leader, and Engineered Sun became a 3M™ Authorized Prestige Window Film Dealer. The company’s growth continued at a steady pace. As time passed, Engineered Sun increasingly focused on window film and eventually sold its solar pool heating business.
What happened next, though, was extraordinary. During August and September 2004, three hurricanes crisscrossed Florida. Engineered Sun’s business exploded as Floridians clammored for any product that could enhance safety, comfort and property protection during severe weather. Engineered Sun used the unexpected market demand to expand its residential sales operations into the Southwest Florida market. Recent years have witnessed the company expanding its commercial operations nationally.
No one succeeds alone.
Mark and Mike each attribute their individual and company success in part to military experience: Ecker served in the United States Navy; DeForest in the United States Marines. But each is quick to add that they are surrounded by a growing team of extraordinary people.
Engineered Sun’s relationship as an Authorized Dealer for 3M™ has been very rewarding, and this success has made Ecker and DeForest avid students of 3M™ corporate culture. One central 3M™ idea is teamwork: Very few people succeed in business on their own. While people must take personal initiative to realize their dreams, they are usually not lone rangers. So teamwork is a common theme at Engineered Sun.
And recruiting and hiring good people makes a difference. Charles Kiester, a retired 3M™ senior vice president for Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics, once noted, “We all buy equipment from the same vendors and raw materials from the same people.
